Bikaner was founded in 1488 AD, by Rao Bikaji, one of the fourteen sons of the famous Rathore king Rao Jodha. Rao Jodha is credited with founding the city of Jodhpur. The city came into being as a link in the overland trading route.
Bikaner boasts a stunning fort and a royal old walled city dotted with some beautiful havelis and encircled by 7km of high walls. The place has been able to retain certain unspoilt charm. Most visitors stay for only one night here en route to or from Jaisalmer, but it is advisable to extend your stay in order to see some beautiful intricately carved havelis and you will also get the opportunity to visit the famous rat temple at nearby Deshnoke, the Junagarh Fort and the government camel-breeding farm.
