History of Ajmer

The history of Ajmer can be traced back to the ancient times, though Ajmer became a strategically and politically important state during the Chauhan domination in the region. The Chauhan king Ajaipal Chauhan constructed the first hill fort that served as a military bastion atop a sandstone hillock in the midst of the Aravalli's. The Taragarh Fort has played a significant role in the political history of Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.

In the initial years Ajmer was known as Ajaimeru and was later rechristened as Ajmer. The history and culture of Ajmer reflects a traditionally rich mixed culture that has absorbed the good things from the Chauhan, Maratha and Mughal cultures.

A stone inscription that dates back to 1320 A.D. indicates that the Chauhans can trace their descent from the lunar dynasty, though the Chauhans themselves have claimed that they belong to the solar dynasty.

The history of Ajmer took a significant turn when the great warrior Prithvi Raj Chauhan sat on the throne of Ajmer. He fought great battles and the local bards still sing ballad praises with regard to his romantic exploits.

Ajmer became an important center of pilgrimage, especially for the Muslims as Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti spend his last living days preaching the tenets of Islam, love and brotherhood. It is believed that Emperor Akbar regularly traveled to Ajmer on pilgrimage to the Dargah of Hazrat Hasan Moinuddin Chisti.

After Prithvi Raj Chauhan was defeated in a battle with Mohammad Ghori, Ajmer was under Sultanate domination for a long time till the Mughal Emperor Akbar annexed this part of the country.

In the later years the Scindhia rulers played a significant role in the history of Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. Later Ajmer came under British domination during colonial rule in India.

In the post independence period, Ajmer became a part of the newly formed Indian union.
