Bayana is a historical town located in a small plain between two hill ranges running parallel to each other near the left bank of river Gambhir. It is situated at a distance of 45 Km southwest of Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. The town is quite famous for its forts and monuments. According to a popular legend Bayana was founded by Banasur a demon who lived here during the time of Lord Krishna. The ancient name of Bayana was Sripatha or Sriprastha. The town has several remains and leftovers of forts and monuments from the ancient past that makes it a major center of attraction among the visitors. The place is a curious mixture of Hindu and Muslim relics. In the past it was ruled by the stalwarts like Muhammad Ghori, Sikandar Lodhi and Humayun as various important battles were fought over here.
Among the various places of interest Bayana is quite famous for its forts and monuments. The Bijaigarh Fort built by Jadon Raja Bijai Pal in 1040 AD is quite famous. Apart from this there are various monolithic sandstone pillars which are a rare combination of Hindu and Muslim styles bearing many inscriptions are also quite incredible. The Barah Khambon ki Chhatri and Lodi Minar are counted among the prominent forts and monument of Bayana. The Barah Khambon ki Chhatri, a pavilion of 12 pillars is a red sandstone catacomb lying at the foothills within the opaque bushes. Lodi Minar is an incomplete structure of Lodi’s, built in 1519-20 by Nizam Khan. The construction of Lodi Minar was unfortunately stalled by the Mughal emperor Babur. The ancient forts and monuments are almost in ruins at Bayana but still patiently uttering the story of different invaders to the visitors. The writing of Urdu is also festooned on the walls of the fort to grab the Muslim travelers
