Churu - INTRODUCTION
Churu, who was a Jat Chief, founded the town of Churu in 1620 AD. This town then became a part of the Kingdom of Bikaner. Widely known for the grand Kothar Haveli and Kanhaiya Haveli that have big paintings of lovers who made history like Dhola Maru and Sassi Punnu, Churu is made up of semi arid sandy plains and is only watered by Katli river in the north east. Churu, the headquarters of the largest desert district, is a part of the frescoland of Shekhawati. Climate
The district of Churu in Rajasthan is a semi arid sandy plain. The rolling sand hills of the district's southwest portion form part of the Bagar tract that is famous for the breeding of sheep, cattle, and camels. The town receives very little rainfall and is mainly a dry land as it is only irrigated by Katli River in the northeast region.
Location
The district of Churu is adjacent to the town of Jhunjhunu, with only 52 kms to cover. But all major cities of the state are far off from Churu. The capital city of Jaipur is at a distance of 210 kms, Bikaner is at a distance of 185 kms and Jodhpur is 380 kms away from the district of Churu.
Churu - HISTORY
In history, the town of Churu has witnessed many downfalls, as the Thakur of Churu was an ambitious person. Initially the trading classes of the town were well off as trade flourished well there. Gradually Thakur of Churu, Thakur Sher Singh imposed heavy taxes on the traders thereby forcing them to move to Sikar. Later Thakur Sher Singh revolted against the Maharaja of Bikaner but failed. Later he had to commit suicide and the town came directly under the kingdom of Bikaner. The king of Bikaner later convinced the traders to return to the town as the town was in a ruining condition.
Apart from this history of rise and fall of various rulers, Churu has also seen some love stories that went ahead to be icon for impending generations. The love story of Dhola and Maru and that of Sassi and Punnu are still very popular among the people there.
Main Attractions
The town of Churu does not have much to offer to its visitors except for the few historical buildings like Ratangarh fort, Salasar Balaji Temple and Surana Haveli. The town even does not have any handicrafts to boast about except for some good sandalwood objects.
Ratangarh
The Maharaja of Bikaner, Ratan Singh constructed this gigantic fort in 1820 AD on Agra Bikaner highway. It is evident from the architecture of the town that the city was planned much before the construction started. The shopping area is made in the shape of a cross. Some grand havelis surround the clock tower of the town.
Salasar Balaji
It is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is very well known pilgrimage of the country. Thousands of devotees visit this place with a belief that Lord Balaji will fulfill all their desires.

This six-storied building has more than 1100 artistic windows and doors.
