Kos Minars are the solid round pillars built by Emperor Akbar; stand on a masonry platform constructed with bricks and plastered over with lime. It became an institution during the rule of Mughal which was proven to be critical in its governance. A popular belief regarding the Kos Minars are that they principally made to ease transportation and not communications. The Kos Minars are not architecturally impressive structures to attract the visitors but rich with historical importance and significance. There remain a horse, a rider, a drummer at every Kos Minar and thus the imperial letters were communicated back and forth with immense speed.
The literal meaning of "Kos" a medieval measurement of distance denoting approximately 3 km and "Minar" is the Persian name of tower. These Minars are standing silently as the milestones made in between the period of 1556 to 1707 A.D. Measuring about 30 feet, the Kos Minars were made with an intention of marking their royal route from Agra to Ajmer via Jaipur in the west, from Agra to Mandu via Shivpuri in the south and from Agra to Lahore via Delhi in the north. Akbar derived inspiration to build the Kos Minars from his ancestor, Sher Shah. These Minars today became the key attraction of Rajasthan and contributes a significant place in capturing a position in worlds’ tourist map.
