Jantar Mantar

Tour the massive Jantar Mantar in Jaipur and marvel at the building skill and scientific acumen of those who flourished in the medieval ages.
Designed and constructed under the express guidance of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, who was an accomplished astronomer and scholar, the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is one of the 7 observatories that were constructed in different parts of India.

The observatory was constructed for keeping an account of the local time, planetary positions, different phases of the day on the basis of the sun, movement of the moon, stars, planets and other relevant astronomical data of practical importance.

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is a complex grid of accurate astronomical instruments made of stone. Some of the important instruments that are an integral part of this mammoth observatory are Brihat Samrat Yantra or the massive sundial that indicates the different phases of the day with perfect accuracy, Ram Yantra, Jai Prakash Yantra et al.

All the astronomical instruments at the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur were constructed with stone and masonry with accurate precision based on the exact positions of the latitudes, Equator and the longitudes.

Constructed in 1724, the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur derives its name from the Sanskrit terms, Yantra Mantra that if literally translated mean, instruments and formulae.
