Nahargarh Fort

Tour the mighty Nahargarh Fort that is located atop a hill that overlooks the tranquil waters of the sparkling Man Sagar Lake in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. The term Nahargarh Fort literally means the "home of the tiger" and is also known as the Tiger Fort that has stood the ravages of time as a protective sentinel over the main Jaipur city over the centuries.

According to a popular local legend the Nahargarh Fort was named after a Rathore prince, Nahar Singh, whose soul would haunt the construction site and would not allow the building process to proceed until prayers were conducted and the constructors promised to name the fort after him. This story in all likely hood is just a local tale without any base but it adds to the romantic charm of the fort nevertheless.

The main part of the Nahargarh Fort was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh in 1734 and the rest of the sections were added later by Sawai Ram Singh II and Maharaja Madho Singhji.

A large palatial duck blind dominates the center of the glistening Man Sagar Lake. This part of the fort served as a duck hunting ground for the Jaipur royalty.

The Madhavendra Bhawan situated inside the Nahargarh Fort is definitely worth visiting with its maze of interconnected hallways and rooms. The rooms located in this part of the Fort are adorned with the most colorful and graphic frescoes that are sure to enchant you. These apartments were constructed for the queens and were equipped with toilets, kitchens and other conveniences.

Nahargarh was used as the Jaipur royal treasury for a long time and the fort was inaccessible to commoners. Even the highest nobles of the Jaipur royal court were blindfolded when visiting the fort.
