Jhalawar - INTRODUCTION
Jalim Singh founded the town of Jhalawar, also known as Patan or Jhalrapatan in the year 1838 AD. This city was formed after the British separated this area from Kota. This city was a center of trade and the chief exports were opium, oil seeds and cotton. Just adjacent to the town of Jhalawar lies the site of the ancient city of Chandrawati that was destroyed during the kingdom of Aurangzeb. In the remains of this city lies the temple of Sitaleswar Mahadeva. Red poppy fields and orange laden orchards in the countryside are the most fascinating and colourful site in Jhalawar during winters. The area surrounding Bhawani Mandi is known for contributing a major share to the production of citrus fruit all over the country.

Climate

The city of Jhalawar is known to receive highest rainfall in the state of Rajasthan. The rainfall in the city is around 60-95 cms. The area has dry hot summers and delightful winters. The monsoon is very different from the humid climate of North India plains. During this season, the area generally is cool with gentle breezes keeping the heat off.

Location

The city of Jhalawar is situated at the border of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The city of Kota is at a distance of 87 kms from Jhalawar Situated on the edge of Malwa Plateau in South East Rajasthan, most of the area in Jhalawar is rock-strewn while a smaller part is also covered with fields of poppy and citrus fruits.

Udaipur - HISTORY

Jhala Zalim Singh who was the Dewan of the Kota state founded the city of Jhalawar. This township was first developed as a cantonment and was called as Chaoni Umedpura. The reason behind developing this area as a cantonment was that the Maratha invaders used to pass through this area to invade Hadoti states and Kota. In 1838 AD, British rulers separated this city from the state of Kota. Jhala Madan Singh, the grandson of Jhala Zalim Singh was the first ruler of Jhalawar and made great contributions to the history of this region.

The city of Jhalawar has a lot of geographical variations. You can find hard rocky surfaces on one place and colorful fields of citrus fruits and poppy on the other. This city has one of the most favorable climate for people visiting from other parts of the country. Apart from the climate, the city also has famous historical monuments that are frequented by tourists from other places. The most famous of them all are Bhawani Natya Shala, Buddhist Caves and Stupas, Chandrabhaga Fair, Gagron Fort, Government Museum- Jhalawar and Jhalawar Fort.

Bhawani Natya Shala

Bhawani Natya Shala is situated close to the fort and has a unique architecture. After its establishment in 1921 AD, Parsi Theatre was performed initially. Now the building has been renovated and provides excellent know how of theatre art.

Buddhist Caves and Stupas

The ancient Buddhist caves are situated in the village Kolvi. The most impressive structures here are the carved stupas and a gigantic statue of Gautam Buddha.

Chandrabhaga Fair

This fair is organized every year in the months of October and November at a place called Jhalarpatan that is located at a distance of 6 km from Jhalawar city. The shops at the fair attract the devotees who take bath in the holy river of Chandrabhaga. This holy spot is known as Chandravati.

Gagron Fort

The impressive fort of Gagron that was built over centuries has witnessed a number of great battles on the land of martyrs. The fort surrounded on three sides by river Ahu and Kali Sindh has the mausoleum of Sufi Saint Mithe Shah and thousands of devotees pay a visit to this holy shrine in the month of Moharram every year.

Government Museum-Jhalawar

Government museum is one of the oldest museums in Rajasthan has a fine collection of paintings, rare manuscripts, idols and beautiful statues of Lakshminarayan, Vishnu, Krishna, Ardhanarishwar Natraj and Trimurti. This museum was built in the year 1915 AD.

Jhalawar Fort

This colossal fort in the center of the city houses the collectorate and other district offices. You can see the exquisite paintings and mirrors placed at the Zanana Khas by seeking permission from the office located here.

Atishey Jain Temple Chandkheri

This 17th century temple has a lot of religious importance due to the 6 feet tall Adinath statue and is also exemplary in temple architecture. One can get accommodation and food at reasonable price here.

Bhimsagar Dam

The dam built on Ujad River near the erstwhile capital of Khichi Chauhan rulers allows its visitors a glance of a perfect blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture. Chandrabhaga Temples

Some outstanding temples built in the 7th century AD on the banks of Chandrabhaga River catch the sight of the visitors of the city. Intricately carved pillars and arched gateways are a perfect example of temple architecture. The Shantinath Jain temple built in 11th century is also significant with fine murals and wonderful sculptures.

Dag

Widely Acclaimed for some 12th century AD temples of Dageshwari Mata, Kani ka Maqbara and Kama Varneshwar Mahadeo, Dag provides a fascinating experience in the bucolic ambience to its visitors.

Dalhanpur

On the banks of Chappi River, stands Dalhanpur that is famous for Marvelously carved pillars, torans and exquisite sculptures of the ancient ruins of impressive temples. Dense forests add to the natural beauty of the place.

Fort of Gangadhar

This structure has the oldest rock inscription and some wonderful temples.

Jhalarapatan

The entire town was built in the confinement of walls to protect the trade caravans as they used this place as an intersection. The major attraction of the city is an ancient Surya temple that has some splendid sculptures and well-preserved idols of Surya. This town was popularly known as a city of bells.

Kakuni

Situated in the district of Baran, this place is known for the remains of some ancient temples. A life size idol of Lord Ganesha and a Shiva Lingam built in 8th century AD are some remarkable structures. On the other side of Parvan River lie the ruins of Bhimgarh that are worth a visit.

Rain Basera

Rain Basera, located on the banks of Kishan Sagar Pond is an ideal picnic spot. This amazing wooden cottage was first built at some other place and was later brought to this place.
