One of the prosperous districts in Rajasthan, Jhunjhunu is the place of the business magnets and modern farmers.
Founded by the Kaimkhani Nawabs in the 15th century, Jhunjhunu remained in their control until Rajput ruler Sardul Singh took over in 1730 AD. The British based the local Shekhawati brigade in Jhunjhunu in the 1830s to halt the activities of the bandits.
Another tale has it that the Pandavas bathed their weapons in the Surya Kund here and thereby got salvation. On the occasion of Bhadrapad Amavasya, hundreds of people throng this place to take a dip in the holy water.
Stories of valor abound in the region. Innumerable monuments are connected with lives and tales of warriors of Jhunjhunu. The havelis of the rich and famous attract the tourists with the fresco paintings in different colors and shades. The culture and history of Jhunjhunu is very well depicted in these paintings. However, these havelis now lie vacant.
Embraced by the Aravali in the south-east, Jhunjhunu has huge copper fields lying in the bowl of these hilly ranges. Most part of the district is semi-desert.
