Location

Madhogarh- History and Legends

The Kachhwaha Rajputs built the Madhogarh Tunga fort. It is believed that the fort was either built in early 17th century or even before that. Madhogarh-Tunga was the site of a fight between the Kachhawaha Rajputs and the Marathas, wherein both were widely acclaimed for their war techniques and bravery. Things went from bad to worse during the times of Sawai Prithvi Singh's time (1778-1803), because he and the Maratha General Mahadji Scindia were always searching for a chance to kill each other and annex their territory. Once General Mahadji Scindia advanced up to Dausa, which was extremely close to Jaipur. This led to the fierce battle between the two states. The Maratha and Jaipur forces met at Tunga where a fierce battle was fought for three days in May 1787. The Rajput forces at the end defeated the Marathas who were supposedly trained by French trainers. Thakur Bhawani Singh who is the fourth generation descendant of Thakur Pratap Singh Ji has now converted the Madhogarh Tunga Fort into a heritage hotel.

There are two fine masonry tanks, one at the hilltop and another below it in Madhogarh village. Madhogarh, a village famous for its old havelis, is situated in the foothills of northern Aravallis. The garrison commander of the nearby fort supposedly built the masonry tank atop the hill in 18th century. The fort is in ruins but the hilltop pond is still in a fine state. The Mahajan community of the village built the masonry tank below the hill 130 years ago. Both these fine tanks remain almost dry due to the continuous spell of drought, spanning almost a quarter of a century now.

The tourists hardly have anything else to see at Madhogarh apart from sightseeing at the fort that has now been converted into a heritage hotel.
