Mandore - INTRODUCTION
Mandore, located at a distance of 9 kms north of the city of Jodhpur was the capital of Marwar before Rao Jodha shifted the capital town to Jodhpur believing it to be more secured than Mandore. The town of Mandore remained the capital of Marwar Empire for a very long time from 6th to 14th century and was called as Mandavyapur. It is truly a heaven in the desert with beautifully laid out gardens. The trees of Peepal, Banyan, Palms and Plantains along with swirling fountains and lovely peacocks make the town a visual treat for its visitors. Extensive gardens at Mandore make it a popular local attraction among the public.

Climate

The climate of Mandore is extremely hot in summer season. The temperature rises up to 42'C during the peak months of May and June. During winters, the temperature goes as low as 9'C. The region receives scanty rainfall even during monsoon season.

Location

The town of Mandore is located at a distance of nearly 9 kms from the city of Jodhpur and is located on the verge of the starting of Thar Desert in Rajasthan.

Udaipur - HISTORY

The town of Mandore was the capital of Marwar before the then ruler decided to shift the capital to Jodhpur. The town remained the capital from 6th to 14th century. Then Rao Jodha relocated the capital to Jodhpur as he thought that Jodhpur was more secure than Mandore, known as Mandavyapur. The town of Mandore was settled since the late Gupta period in 5th and 6th century and had a 10 km wall and a population of 50,000. It was captured by the Rathores in 1381AD and later successfully deserted when the court was transferred to Jodhpur after the relocation of the capital in 1459 AD. The ruins now stand in verdant, dappled gardens have an entrance through the Ajit Pol, the gate that was built as a celebration of Ajit Singh's victory over the Mughals in 1707 AD. It is said that Mandore was given as a wedding gift to a Rathore prince when he married a Pratihara princess. Since then it has always been associated with the majesty and bravery of the Rajputs.

Ajit Pol

Ajit Pol is a gate that was constructed to mark the celebration of victory of Ajit Singh over the Mughals. The gate was made in 1707 AD.

Government Museum-Mandore

This place with the possession of valued treasure like carved cenotaphs, hall of heroes, palaces and old fort is a place worth paying a visit.

Hall of Heroes

It is a hall made up of rocks. It houses sixteen gigantic statues carved out of a single rock apart from the cenotaphs of the former Maharajas of Jodhpur. The hall also displays painted portrayal of local heroes like Pabuji and Chamunda.

Mandore Garden

Located adjacent to the old capital of Marwar are the Mandore Gardens. The widespread gardens have a rock terrace and are a popular picnic spot among the locals.

Memorials of Maharaja Jaswant Singh and Maharaja Ajit Singh

The rulers of the Rathore dynasty were cremated at Mandore. Therefore the town also houses the royal cremation ground where the memorials of Maharaja Jaswant Singh and Maharaja Ajit Singh are located. Maharaja Ajit Singh was cremated along with six of his queens 58 concubines. Several Hindu and Jain temples are also located there.

Pleasure Palace of Abhai Singh

There is now a museum enclosing the pleasure palace of Abhai Singh. The 'Janana' at the pleasure palace indicates that the ladies of the royal family accompanied him in his visits to this palace.

Shrine of 30 Crore Gods

This shrine has the depictions of 30 crore deities among whom Lakshmi, Kali and Brahma are the most famous ones.

Ossian

The ancient town of Ossian is located at a distance of 65 kms from the city of Jodhpur. It is widely known for Brahmanical and Jain temples that date back to 8th and 11th centuries. One must not miss visiting Ossian during the visit to Mandore and Jodhpur.

Balsamand Lake and Palace

The Balsamand Lake is an artificially made lake. It is very famous for its picturesque beauty. Summer palaces are located on the banks of the lake and there is a bird sanctuary adjoining the place. All these features make this place a favorite picnic spot among many travelers as well as the locals.
