Pushkar Fair

Every year in the month of November, the sleepy town of Pushkar wakes up to the reverberating sounds of thousands of camels, horses and cows that descend on Pushkar for the yearly extravaganza called-Pushkar Fair. It is that time of the year, when people from across Rajasthan congregate with their livestock in Pushkar. The Pushkar Fair is the trading time as animals change hands during the festival. Camel is the most sold and bought animal during the festival. You can also see a number of other animals in the fair.

Also known as the Cattle Fair, the Pushkar Fair is not only about trading of animals. The fair attracts large number of people from different corners of Rajasthan. Men in turbans and women in their colorful dresses present a riot of colors. During the fair, Pushkar buzzes with people, camels, horses and cows.

For a tourist visiting Pushkar during the fair, the Pushkar Fair offers immense options to experience and enjoy the fair. During the fair, various competitions are organized, which a tourist can enjoy. Camel race, camel beauty contest, long moustache competition and powerful moustache competitions are some of the events that are organised in the fair. A number temporary shopping stalls mushroom during the fair.

Pushkar is a Hindu pilgrimage center that attracts large number of Hindus during the fair. Many devotees come to take a dip in the holy waters of the Pushkar Lake. In the last day of the festival (fair concludes on the Karthik Purnima), bathing in the lake begins from the early hours. Pushkar is also home to the only Brahma temple in the world.

Pushkar is easily accessible. Jaipur is the nearest airport for Pushkar, which is about 145 kilometres away. Ajmer is the nearest railhead to Pushkar, which is just 11 kilometres away.
