Transparent, placid and radiant, the shimmering waters
of the enthralling Lake Pichola enchant you into a romantic
trance.
One of the most visited tourist attractions in Udaipur,
Lake Pichola is a manmade lake with an interesting history.
According to available historical records Lake Pichola
used to be a tiny manmade pond that was dug by a gypsy
in the 15th century. In the ancient times there were
mud dykes on it for irrigation purposes.
It is believed that Maharana Udai Singh of Chittor
met a holy sage on the banks of this pond cosseted by
the Aravalli's during a hunting trip. The sage advised
him to build a new city here and the Maharana took his
advice very seriously. He dug this tiny pond and converted
it into a massive lake that is spread over a sprawling
1.5 square kilometers and went on to build the Nouchouki
Palace on its banks, thus sowing the seeds of breathtaking
Udaipur.
Lake Pichola got its romantic name from the Picholi
village located in its vicinity. In the later years
the rulers of Udaipur built several stunning monuments
in white marble on the banks of this cool tranquil lake.
Set in the middle of Udaipur, Lake Pichola is surrounded
by shrines, embankments, marble palaces and bathing
ghats. The Lake Palace situated in the middle of this
fascinating lake is the final gem on the sparkling Udaipur
crown.
Lake Pichola narrows down at a certain point where
the two banks of the lake almost meet. There are several
ornamental bridges that connect the two banks in this
area. Enjoy fun boat cruises on the delightful Lake
