Sas Bahu Temple, Nagda

Sas Bahu structure is one of the most ancient structures situated in the sleepy village of Nadga in the northwest of Udaipur. The temple was built by king Mahapala in 10th century. This 11th century complex is some 19 km away from Udaipur and just 1 km before the famous Ekling Temple on the National Highway No-8. Built on the elevated platform there are two main temples with a cluster of small temples with the original name of this temple group is Shastra Bahu Temple. Different rulers built many temples in and around the town of Nagda but the ruins of the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Vishnu are found in plenty.

Sas Bahu TempleAs per the name the temple seem to imply the relationship of mother in law and daughter in law. But actually the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The larger temple with a torna in front of it is called as the Saas while the smaller temple has a octagonal ceilings and is called as Bahu. The temple is situated very near to agriculture field and a small water body making the whole place very scenic with soothing ambience. ASI has now maintained this site. Stories from Mahabharata and Ramayana are beautifully carved on the panels and images of Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh can be easily recognized on the temple walls. Both the structures of Saas Bahu temples are placed on a same plan having an altar, a mandapa (columned prayer hall) with outcrops and a porch. The unique special features of Bahu temple is that its walls being decorated with eight female figurines having a richly carved octagonal ceiling. It is a must visited site for those who love ancient monuments and are interested in their history.
