Junagarh Fort

Junagarh fort situated in Bikaner of Rajasthan is one of the most imposing and impressive forts of India. Orignally called as Chintamani the fort was constructed between the years 1588 and 1593 by Raja Rai Singh. It is one of the few forts in India that are not built on any hilltop. The complex consists of courtyards, pavilions, palaces, gardens and balconies. The walls of Junagarh fort are adorned with carved stones, precious marbles and paintings. Each Palace in the complex was built by different ruler over the centuries. The modern city of Bikaner was developed around the fort that overwhelms you with historic charm and monumental splendor. The fort of Junagarh was encircled with 986 m stonewall that has 37 bastions that give it a formidable yet impressive character. The deep moat that encloses the stone wall made it almost impossible for enemies to conquer the fort of Junagarh.

There are two important gates of the Junagarh fort which are known as Surajpol and Daulatpol. Surajpol is the main gate of thefortwhile the Daulatpol is historically significant as it has handprints of the royal ladies who committed sati on the pyres of their deceased husbands on the Sati stambh. The other gates that lead to the Junagarh Fort interiors are the Karan Pol, Chand Pol and the Fateh Pol. The lavish Zenana quarters at Junagarh fort is the place from were the women interacted with the outsiders through carved stone screens. Even today on a trip to Junagarh one can see the royal lifestyle of the days of the yore.
