Karni Mata Temple
Karni Mata Temple is dedicated to a female Hindu sage born in the Charan caste. Karni Mata is worshipped as the incarnation of the Goddess Durga by her followers. She is an official deity of the royal family of Jodhpur and Bikaner. Most of the temples dedicated to her does not contain any image or idol of her but rather contains the foot prints to symbolize her visit to that place. The most famous temple of Karni Mats is situated in Deshnoke situated near to Bikaner and Nokha. One of the astonishing factors of the Karni Mata Temple is thousands of rats that swam all over the temple floors. Strange enough but true these rats do not bite the barefooted pilgrims who enter the temple. Through out the year, thousands of pilgrims from India visit Mata Karni temple o pay religious tribute. But the festival of Navratri is very famous over and an annual affair of the temple.
Even outside the Rajasthan Karni Mata is a revered deity and respected and loved in the area of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. According to a legend if one of the rats is killed it must be replaced made of solid gold. Sighting a white rat amidst hordes of black rats is considered to be especially auspicious.
