Founded by Rao Pratap Singh in 1775 AD Alwar is amongst the historic cities of Rajasthan. Alwar is often referred to as the Tiger Gate of India as it lies close to Sariska renowned for the Tiger Reserve.

The best time to visit Alwar is during the winter months from September to February. Winter months are pleasant enough for long stays. The summer months are best avoided for visiting Alwar.

Amongst the must visit places in Alwar is the huge fort that was built before the rise of Mughal Empire. With large and small towers and numerous opening the fort still stands tall.

Then there is the 18th century City Palace or the Vinay Vilas Mahal. The palace reveals an exquisite mix of Rajput and Mughal architectures. The Government Museum of Alwar is home to the Mughal and Rajput paintings and various ancient manuscripts.

Close to the City Palace are the other tourist spots of Alwar. There is an artificial lake; Moosi Maharani ki chhatri and an enchanting setting called 'Shimla' that is the picture perfect escape from the Sun and sand of Alwar.
